The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) transported 25 million passengers on long-distance trains in 2023.
Ukrzaliznytsia announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
The company’s trains transported 2.1 million passengers to European countries.
"In terms of the number of passengers carried, we had already reached the 2022 figures before the large-scale invasion. We transported 2.1 million passengers to the EU countries, but the demand remains very high. Therefore, we are working to expand international routes and increase the number of seats on the existing routes. We are paying special attention to group transportation of children and improving services, especially for our military personnel," said Ukrzaliznytsia’s Board Chairman Yevhen Liaschenko.
In particular, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 2.1 times more passengers to EU countries in 2023 than it did in 2022.
In 2023, almost 450,000 passengers were transported based on group requests, many of whom were children from families affected by the war, children from internally displaced families, and passengers belonging to other socially vulnerable categories.
As reported earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 17 million passengers on long-distance routes in 2022. Ukrzaliznytsia trains carried over 25 million passengers on long-distance routes in 2021. The figure for 2021 was half the figure in the pre-COVID period. For comparison, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 55.9 million passengers on long-distance routes in 2018 and 53.3 million in 2019.
