The Kiev (Zhulyany) international airport expects to begin drafting a project for lengthening its runway by 150 meters at the beginning of 2014.
"The issue is very complex because it requires a detailed design. Pre-project research - which involves examination of not only the geometric possibilities of the airfield, but also the angles of approach and landing - is presently underway. I think we will be able to begin designing it not earlier than the beginning of next year," the head of the Zhulyany airport’s board of directors, Denys Kostrzhevskyi, told journalists, the portal DTN reports.
He predicted that construction work would be performed approximately in 2015.
On the previously announced plans to build a second runway, Kostrzhevskyi said, "This is a distant prospect, if it is at all possible." He attributed this to the fact that the increase in the intensity of flights leads to an increase in the noise level in the city center and, consequently, discontent among people living near the airport.
