Deutsche Bahn, the largest railway operator in Germany, will provide support to the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (JSC Ukrzaliznytsia) in the areas of freight, passenger transportation, and infrastructure management, as well as provision of services and technical maintenance from January 1, 2021.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Prime Minister Oleksii Honcharuk, the Interfax Ukraine news agency reports.

"The primary task will be to study the state of Ukrzaliznytsia and create a roadmap for changes. The next step – from January 1, 2021 – Deutsche Bahn will provide support in managing Ukrzaliznytsia in the areas of freight, passenger transportation, infrastructure, provision of services and technical maintenance," he said.

According to the prime minister, the partnership between the two companies will also stimulate the launch of new routes and facilitate closer integration of their transport systems.

"The priority of our government is to increase the management efficiency of Ukrzaliznytsia and ensure its transition to the European rail transport market model," said Honcharuk.

At the same time, he said that the cooperation between the two companies did not provide for sale or lease of such a strategically important state company as Ukrzaliznytsia.

As reported, a memorandum of understanding on strategic development of Ukrzaliznytsia was recently signed between Ukrzaliznytsia and Deutsche Bahn.
