The General Assembly of the Association of European Public Postal Operators (PostEurop) decided in Belgrade on 16 October 2024 to permanently exclude the Russian Post and the Belarusian Post from the association.
Ukrposhta, the Ukrainian state postal operator, announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
The membership of these organizations was initially suspended in 2022 because of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, and the suspension was extended in 2023.
The sanctions, voted for by European postal operators, permanently strip Russia and Belarus of the right to participate in PostEurop’s international postal initiatives, including cooperation on logistics and customs.
"The postal operators of countries where one destroys peaceful infrastructure and kills innocent people every day, and the other stands by, have no right to be part of the civilized European postal community," said Ihor Smilianskyi, CEO of Ukrposhta.
According to PostEurop, it is a trade association that has represented European postal operators since 1993. It is an officially recognized Restricted Union of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Its 55 members in 53 countries and territories collectively operate 175,000 retail counters, employ 2 million people, and connect 800 million people daily.
