The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) has signed a contract with the Kryukov Railcar Building Works for the manufacture of 44 passenger railcars.

Ukrzaliznytsia announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

According to the terms of the relevant tender, the ultimate cost of the new railcars is UAH 1,951,008,600.

Under the terms of the contract, the new railcars should be manufactured and delivered within the next two years.

The new railcars will be financed with funds from the state budget.

As planned, 20 compartment cars, 12 sleeping cars, 9 couchette (Platzkart) cars (which Ukrzaliznytsia is purchasing for the first time since 2008), and 3 cars designed to carry passengers with disabilities will be manufactured under the new contract.

"In addition to compartment, sleeper, and couchette cars, we are also ordering cars with increased accessibility for wheelchair users. These cars will provide additional levels of comfort for these passengers. All the other cars will also be equipped with additional tools to improve accessibility. This purchase will also allow us to replace those railcars that were unfortunately lost because of enemy attacks. We will also focus on the modernization of outdated rolling stock," said Ukrzaliznytsia Board Chairman Yevhen Liaschenko.

The new railcars will be equipped with air conditioning, changing tables, sockets and USB ports for fast-charging gadgets, coffee machines, and modern lighting control systems.

The railcars for the transportation of passengers with disabilities will be equipped with wheelchair lifts (platform lifts) for easy boarding of passengers in wheelchairs.

In addition, the doors of the passenger compartments in compartment cars and sleeping cars will be equipped with alarm systems and door locks for greater passenger safety. Video surveillance systems will also be installed.
