The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (JSC Ukrzaliznytsia) intends to transport mail in the containers it plans to include on some passenger trains, the CFTS portal reports.
According to JSC Ukrzaliznytsia’s Operating Director Viacheslav Yeremin, the company is currently in talks with postal operators. He was commenting on reports that the company wants to use passenger trains to transport freight.
According to him, the railway is a predictable and stable mode of transport that can ensure timely delivery of mail of almost any size.
“Our postal operators are interested in this service. We are currently negotiating with them, and they are already very interested in this service because their customers will always be able to receive their cargoes on time, regardless of the weather and the other factors that affect transportation by road,” he said.
According to him, this service will be provided in the same way as a car transporter, and it will not affect the quality and speed of passenger transportation in any way.
"The sender wants to be sure that a container that is loaded onto a platform in the evening will reach its destination at the exact time in the morning. Otherwise, it is more convenient for him to use road transport. Therefore, we are now considering upgrading the existing flatcars and attaching them to passenger trains (just like flatcars carrying cars),” he said.
It plans to use flatcars, which will be upgraded with bogies for passenger cars, for transportation of mail.
