Aircrafts will not be landing in Vilnius airport in summer 2017 due to the runway reconstruction, the press service of the state-owned company Lietuvos oro uostai ("Lithuanian airports") reported.
The reconstruction will be carrying out during the summer of 2017 from July 14 to August 18. The works will be performed only during the day, so the daily flights will not be impossible. 77 per cent of flights and 90 per cent of passengers are to be moved to other cities – Kaunas and Palanga.
"Kaunas will become the capital of Lithuanian aviation in 2017. It is likely that many passengers will choose this air gateway.", - says Artūras Stankevičius, Director of Vilnius Airport.
The most favorable date for reconstruction has been chosen on the basis of the analysis of weather conditions. In the selected July-August period the weather in Vilnius has the least rainy days. Preparatory works for reconstruction will start in spring.
The runway at Vilnius Airport was built back in 1958. Its last reconstruction took place over 20 years ago.
