The pre-feasibility study for the extension of the 1435-millimeter-gauge rail network from the European Union to Ukraine and Moldova, which the European Investment Bank’s technical advisory service (JASPERS) is preparing under the supervision of the European Commission’s Directorate of Mobility and Transport, focuses on the possibility of laying tracks of the 1435-millimeter gauge.
Volodymyr Shemaev, director of the office for international projects at the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia), provided this explanation.
According to him, experts will assess the possibility of laying 1435-mm-gauge tracks "through the territory of Ukraine and Moldova along the presumed corridor Krakow - Mostyska-2 -Lviv - Vadul Siret - Chisinau," and there is a separate Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant program for border crossing points on the TEN-T network.
That is, a European-gauge railway could potentially pass through the western regions of Ukraine from north to south if the project is implemented.
As the CFTS portal reported earlier, the first in-person meeting involving the preparation of a pre-feasibility study for the extension of the 1435-millimeter-gauge rail network to Ukraine and Moldova has already taken place.
