The volume of freight transport between Ukraine and the European Union increased by 4% to 39.4 million tons in the period of January-October 2013, the press center of the State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) has announced.

The volume of freight transport between Ukraine and the Customs Union of the Common Economic Area (the CEA Customs Union) reduced by 8.4% to 79.96 million tons during the same period.

Exports accounted for most of the freight transport volumes between Ukraine and the European Union at 35.2 million tons (-2.7% compared with January-October of last year), followed by imports at 3.36 million tons (+24.6%). The volume of freight transit from the European Union was 880,700 tons (-3.8%).

The volume of freight transport between Ukraine and the CEA Customs Union developed unevenly. In the first 10 months of this year, the flow of goods between Ukraine and Russia reduced by 6% to 65.4 million tons and the flow of goods between Ukraine and Kazakhstan reduced by 60.3% to 6.5 million tons. At the same time, the volume of freight transportation between Ukraine and Belarus increased by 14.9% to 8.1 million tons.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrainian railways have the infrastructural potential to increase the volume of transportation both eastward and westward (by 10-50%).
