1068 (5) The city of Kyiv and the Kyiv subway plan to purchase 50 open-gangway subway cars, which will be enough for 10 trains, at the end of February.

The Kyiv subway’s head Viktor Brahynskyi announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports, citing the Economic Pravda publication.

According to him, the city and the Kyivskyi Metropoliten municipal enterprise (which operates the Kyiv subway) are currently performing the procedure for purchasing the subway cars with a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The second phase of the procedure should begin now, and an auction will take place at the end of February.

"We plan to purchase open-gangway subway cars based on our technical conditions. Few are using separate carriages in the world, and open-gangway subway cars are more spacious and can accommodate more passengers. We plan to purchase 50 open-gangway subway cars. Correspondingly, there will be 10 trains," said Brahynskyi.

According to him, the Kyiv subway is also preparing tender documentation for the purchase of the new carriages under the "Kyiv City Electric Transport" project, under which it plans to purchase an additional 50 open-gangway subway cars.

"We plan to take delivery of this equipment within a year after the winner of the auction is selected, i.e., in 2024," Brahynskyi said.

As reported earlier, a tender for the supply of carriages to the Kyiv subway with a loan from the EBRD was supposed to take place in March 2021. A year earlier, in March 2020, the EBRD board of governors approved the disbursement of EUR 50 million for the purchase of rolling stock for the Kyiv subway.

In September 2020, the Kyiv City Council provided the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development with a guarantee of fulfillment of the Kyiv subway’s debt obligations, which allowed it to proceed to the next procurement stage (the invitation of tenders).

The new carriages were intended for use on the Syretsko-Pecherska subway line, the new section of which will connect downtown Kyiv with the Vynohradskyi residential district of the city.
