The Zhytomyr airport plans to send documents for the opening of a border crossing at the airport to the Cabinet of Ministers in the spring of 2016 and subsequently extend its runway. The airport’s Director Serhii Budiak announced this in an interview, the Interfax Ukraine news agency reports.

"We will increase the runway by 40 meters to 2,400,000 meters to enable us to receive aircraft such as Airbus 320," he said.

Asked when the extension of the runway will be completed and when it will be commissioned, Budiak said it depended on the filing of the relevant documents and approval of these documents by the State Aviation Administration and the government.

"We are currently repairing the terminal. After its completion, we will be able to speak of domestic transport, at least. We would like to have the opportunity to fly to Odesa and Lviv, for example, in the spring. As I said, a border crossing point will be created simultaneously," he said.

As reported, the Zhytomyr airport is aiming to gain the status of an international airport.
