The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (JSC Ukrzaliznytsia) will upgrade its passenger cars and suburban rolling stock in 2019. In particular, it will acquire 46 passenger cars and 3 diesel trains from the Kryukov Railcar Building Works, the CFTS portal reports.

Ukrzaliznytsia’s Board Chairman Yevhen Kravtsov announced this at a news briefing at the Ministry of Infrastructure.

According to the head of the state-owned company, the new passenger cars will be included in the company’s own brand-name trains. "Deliveries are already underway: Ukrzaliznytsia received 3 out of the 46 passenger compartment cars it ordered in January. the rest should arrive before the end of June. Including the eight compartment cars that Ukrzaliznytsia received from the plant in December 2018, the fleet will be replenished with 54 new passenger cars, which will cost UAH 1.5 billion (including VAT)," said Kravtsov.

In addition, according to him, 64 passenger cars will be overhauled, which will improve the quality of passenger transportation and the level of comfort.

The head of Ukrzaliznytsia said that the Lviv Railway planned to purchase three suburban diesel trains this year. They will also be produced by the Kryukov Railcar Building Works.

"Ukrzaliznytsia has not acquired suburban rolling stock since 2015. We are proposing that local authorities, as the customers for services, get involved in the financing and upgrade of critically outdated suburban rolling stock, which carries a large social burden because up to 70% of recipients of social benefits use it," Kravtsov said. He added that a major overhaul aimed at extending the service lives of electric trains and diesel trains were planned. A total of 24 commuter trains will be upgraded.

As the CFTS portal reported earlier, the new passenger diesel trains that the Kryukov Railcar Building Works will build for Ukrzaliznytsia will be equipped with two engines instead of three.
