The Ukrainian Railways public joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) plans to purchase nearly 5,900 gondola cars in 2017 (using its own funds and funds from the EBRD) and manufacture 3,000 freight gondola cars at its own factories in 2017, the company has announced.

As reported earlier, the company purchased 1,020 gondola cars in 2016.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the company also intends to increase in the volume of repairs of all types of railcars this year.

Ukrzaliznytsia invited tenders for supply of 3,000 gondola cars on 18 January. These gondola cars are expected to be delivered in the first half of this year.

The company also announced that 1.6 million tons of cargo were transported on railways in the first 17 days of this year. On average, 681,130 tons of freight are loaded onto freight cars per day, which is 10.7% more than the target for that period and 13.1% more than the volume that was loaded in the first 17 days of January last year.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia the following types of cargoes have increased this year: grain by 127.6%, construction materials by 100.3%, oil by 63.25%, metal by 44.55%, coal by 10.43%, iron by 5.8%, coke by 3.21%, and iron ore by 1.37%.
