Steel production in Ukraine reduced by 0.5% in 2013 compared with 2012, with the country ranking 10th among the 65 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), the Interfax Ukraine news agency reports.

Steel production reduced in most of the ten largest producers in 2013 (except China, Japan, and India) while steel production in Germany remained practically unchanged from the previous year.

The world’s top ten largest producers of crude steel in 2013 were China (779.040 million tons, +7.5%), Japan (110.570 million tons, +3.1%), the United States (86.995 million tons, +2%), India (81.213 million tons, +5.1%), Russia (69.402 million tons, +1.5%), South Korea (66.008 million tons, -4.4%), Germany (42.641 million tons, unchanged from 2012), Turkey (34.658 million tons, +3.4%), Brazil (34.178 million tons, -1%), and Ukraine (32.824 million tons, -0.5%).

Overall, the 65 countries produced 1,582,493,000 tons of crude steel in 2013, which is 3.5% more than they produced in 2012. According to Worldsteel, these countries account for 99% of world steel production. World crude steel production also increased by 3.5% to 1,607,200,000 tons in 2013, compared to 2012.

In December 2013, Ukraine increased production of crude steel by 4.2% compared with December 2012, ranking ninth. Steel production increased in all the top 10 largest producing countries in December.

The top 10 largest producers of crude steel in December were China (62.350 million tons, +6.5%), Japan (9.336 million tons, +9%), United States (7.197 million tons, +0.4%), India (6.908 million tons, +5.8%), South Korea (5.857 million tons, +1.6%), Russia (5.842 million tons, +3.8%), Germany (3.456 million tons, +12.8%), Turkey (2.899 million tons, +1.9%), Ukraine (2.715 million tons, +4.2%), and Brazil (2.655 million tons, +4%).

In total, the 65 countries produced 129.191 million tons of crude steel in December 2013, which is 6.3% more than they produced in December 2012.

In 2012, the major steel producing countries increased production of steel by 1.2% to 1,517,945,000 tons, compared with 2011. The 10 largest producers of steel in 2012 were China, Japan, the United States, India, Russia, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil, and Ukraine.
